A brief history of Mother's Day
Festivals honoring mothers and mother goddesses can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome. But it wasn't until 1907 that the United States decided to join in the festivities, thanks to the efforts of one woman: Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia.
Throughout her life, Anna Jarvis' mother had organized women's groups to support women's rights and health, so Anna thought it a good idea to hold a memorial service in her honor on May 12, 1907, at her mother's church in West Virginia. The idea of honoring mothers caught on, and within five years, virtually every state in America was observing the day. Then, because it had almost become another women's crusade, President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday in 1914.
Jarvis promoted the wearing of one white carnation as a tribute to one's mother, but the custom quickly blossomed into wearing a red or pink carnation in honor of a living mother and a white carnation for one who is deceased.
Today, Mother's Day is a holiday honoring motherhood and is observed differently throughout the world.
